The Upside of Aging: How Long Life Is Changing the World of Health, Work, Innovation, Policy and Purpose explores a titanic shift that will alter every aspect of human existence, from the jobs we hold to the products we buy to the medical care we receive - an aging revolution is underway across America and the world. Moving beyond the stereotypes of dependency and decline that have defined older age, The Upside of Aging reveals the vast opportunity and potential of this aging phenomenon, despite significant policy and societal challenges that must be addressed. With a positive call to action, the book illuminates the upside for health and wellness, work and volunteerism, economic growth, innovation and education. The authors, like the baby boom generation itself, posit new ways of thinking about aging, as longevity and declining birthrates put the world on track for a mature population of unprecedented size and significance. Among topics they examine are: The emotional intelligence and qualities of the aging brain that science is uncovering, ´´senior moments´´ notwithstanding. The new worlds of genomics, medicine and technology that are revolutionizing health care and wellness. The aging population´s massive impact on global markets, with enormous profit potential from an explosion in products and services geared toward mature consumers. New education paradigms to meet the needs and aspirations of older people, and to capitalize on their talents. The benefits that aging workers and entrepreneurs bring to companies, and the crucial role of older people in philanthropy and society. The Upside of Aging defines a future that differs profoundly from the retirement dreams of our parents and grandparents, one that holds promise and power and bears the stamp of a generation that has changed every stage of life through which it has moved. Weaving Complementary Knowledge System and Mindfulness to Educate a Literate Citizenry for Sustainable and Healthy Lives contains 24 chapters written by 33 authors, from 9 countries. The book, which consists of two sections on mindfulness in education and wellness, is intended for a broad audience of educators, researchers, and complementary medicine practitioners. Members of the general public may find appeal and relevance in chapters that advocate transformation in a number of spheres, including K-12 schools, museums, universities, counselling, and everyday lifestyles. Innovative approaches to education, involving meditation and mindfulness, produce numerous advantages for participants in schools, museums, and a variety of self-help contexts of everyday life. In several striking examples, critical stances address a band wagon approach to the application of mindfulness, often by for-profit companies, to purportedly improve quality of education, in contexts where learning has been commodified and ideologies such as neoliberalism have been mandated by politicians and implemented by policy makers. In different international contexts, Buddhist roots of mindfulness are critically reviewed by a number of authors. Chapters on wellness focus on complementary practices, including art therapy, Jin Shin Jyutsu, Iridology, and yoga. Foci in the wellness section include sexual health, prescription drug addiction, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and a variety of common ailments that can be addressed using complementary medicine. New theories, such a polyvagal theory, provide scope for people to become aware of their bodies in different ways and maintain wellbeing through changes in lifestyle, heightened self-awareness, and self-help.
What does it feel like to strike it rich in the world of health and wellness? Does it mean improved sleep? What about being able to walk longer, enjoy a day out at the lake, or just keep up with the family on a lazy weekend? Health is wealth, no way around it. Striking it rich in health is always on your terms. What would better health mean to you, right now? Hold on to that answer, because this book will help you get to that destination. So, let´s get to the point: are you getting rich...or finding yourself struggling to keep your head above water? What does your health profit and loss statement really look like at the moment? If things aren´t as rosy as you would like them to be, you´re not alone. For decades, the health and fitness industry has been promising you riches, but giving you pocket change. You´ve probably run into things like, ´´Lose 20 pounds in 20 days´´, ´´Guaranteed six-pack in six weeks´´, and ´´Drop three dress sizes in four weeks!´´ These are just some of the sneaky slogans that are siphoning away valuable health dollars, sometimes right before your very eyes! It´s old. It´s tiresome. It changes now. A Missing Piece, Now Revealed Mainstream fitness programs have one major flaw: they only address one part of the greater health equation. It´s all physical, with little variation: just move a little more, eat a little less, and you´ll be on your way to a huge health jackpot. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jay Nixon. This book brings together contributions from scholars from Europe and the United States to honor the theological work of Antje Jackelén, the first female Archbishop of the Church of Sweden. In Archbishop Antje Jackeléns installation homily, she identifies the strength of the Church as a global network of prayer threads. This book is an honorary and celebratory volume providing a global network of prayerful essays by contributors from a variety of academic disciplines to creatively engage, reflect, and illuminate the theological work of Archbishop Jackelén. Prior to her tenure in the Church of Sweden as Bishop of the Diocese of Lund and now the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden, Jackelén served as professor of Systematic Theology, Director of the Zygon Center and President of European Society for the Study of Science and Religion (ESSSAT). While each essay intentionally embraces the theological and ministerial work of Jackelén during her academic tenure, they also venture into areas as diverse as climate change, media studies, human uniqueness, hermeneutics, time, ethics, Christian theological tradition and history, traumatology, politics and society. As the first diverse explication of the theological thinking of Archbishop Jackelén by her theological colleagues, this text provides scholars with an expansion of the scope of Archbishop Jackeléns theological thinking and initiates laity into the impact of Jackelén thinking that combines with grace and precision the traditions of the Church, the challenges and gifts of the sciences, and the needs and longings of society and the world.
